A place full of history and things to do, you won’t be bored!
Baratti was once an important Etruscan settlement, the only one by the sea in what is now Tuscany. From here ships would depart, loaded with iron extracted on the Isle of Elba and refined right on this coast, where now the Necropolis and Archeological park can be found.
High above stands Populonia, with its Acropolis. Today it is possible to reach it through a panoramic, paved road, to enjoy the beauty of the citadel, and do some shopping.
Right in front of I Pesci, there is a tourist marina, where boats and inflatable rafts can be rented for a day of scuba diving or just to enjoy a swim in these crystal clear waters. The gulf also hosts numerous restaurants and bars to satisfy all tastes.
The small center of Stazione di Populonia is just a few minutes away by car, where you can do small groceries and find the farmacy. The city of Piombino, where all kinds of services can be found, is instead around fifteen minutes away.
Piombino is mostly known for being the port from which to depart towards the Isle of Elba, but it is so much more. A city with a rich history, with a historical center dating back to the 13th century, especially lively during summer evenings, with charming shops and an excellent variety of restaurants.
A few more locales that deserve to be visited:
- Suvereto: a medieval hamlet, still surrounded by its walls;
- Campiglia Marittima: among the official list of the most beautiful hamlets in Italy;
- Castagneto Carducci: a town built around its medieval castle;
- Bolgheri: with its famous wines and cypresses.
A special mention goes to the “Strada del vino Costa degli Etruschi” which, starting from the valley of Cecina, going through Cecina, Montescudaio, Casale Marittimo, Bolgheri, Castagneto Carducci, Suvereto & Campiglia Marittima goes all the way to the Isle of Elba, where various internationally renowned wine cellars can be visited.
